Ruby on Rails Outreach Workshop for Women: Day 2

Pivotal Labs HQ (map)

Selected By: Sarah Mei

This is the second day of a two-day outreach workshop. If you're coming, both days are required. Meetup.com doesn't allow a single event to span multiple days, so they are separate events on the calendar, but if you are coming you should RSVP yes for both. Click here to RSVP for Friday.

Our first outreach workshop was a great success, so we're doing it again! This workshop is for women who want to learn Ruby on Rails. Anyone who self-identifies as female is welcome to register. Guys, you're welcome to attend as well, as the +1 of a women who's learning Ruby. So find a friend and have her register!

In this workshop, we'll take you through building a complete web application using Ruby on Rails. By the end of the day, you'll have an application on the internet that connects to a database and reads and writes information.

Friday, July 31st, 6-9pm: installfest and mixer. Volunteers will help you get your laptop ready to run Ruby and Rails.

Saturday, August 1st, 10am-4pm: write code. Leave with a web application you built!

Total programming novices, system administrators, developers in other languages, and folks who attended our first workshop are all welcome. We'll have 5-7 different classes separated by experience level. Each participant needs to bring their own computer. Childcare and private space for nursing or pumping is available.

When you RSVP for Friday, you'll see some questions about your computer and programming experience. Please answer them in as much detail as you can - it will help us figure out how allocate class space.

Don't forget to RSVP for Friday too!

Many thanks to our sponsors for making this possible:
* Pivotal Labs for space and an incredible amount of logistical help.
* Engine Yard for lunch on Saturday.
* Heroku for pizza on Friday AND food and drinks @ the afterparty!
* Triptych Restaurant and catering, for stretching the lunch budget on Saturday to accommodate folks from the wait list!
* PeepCode for donating a FREE screencast to every attendee!
* DevChix and RailsBridge for ongoing organizational support.
And, of course, the SF Ruby meetup!

This was an amazing gathering! It was fantastic to get so much tutorial help and Bosco and Salman were patient, thorough instructors.

Great workshop. I think some of the kinks begin ironed out from the first workshop really helped and things ran SO smoothly. I learned a lot!

Well organized and the volunteers were very informative and helpful. People were divided up into groups based on skill level which helped out a lot. It would nice over the course of the year to present different aspects of the programming language/different exercises; notably several of the workshop attendees had already gone through the basic setup and topics one. I thought the TDD session at the end with Josh was great and should just be converted into slides/modules which could be used in the future. References to good books on the subject (you guys provided some links to tutorials and forums) would also be helpful. Overall it was a fun morning and afternoon and I was impressed by the enthusiasm by all who attended.
