May 2010 SF Ruby - JavaScript Testing Frameworks

Engine Yard (map)

Selected By: Bosco So

Inspired by Brian Colfer's idea posted a while back, at this month's meetup we'll be looking at a subset of the many testing frameworks for Javascript. In particular, we'll look at several that don't depend on in-browser testing:

  • Screw Unit: a Javascript BDD Framework with nested describes, a convenient assertion syntax, and an intuitive test browser.
  • Harmony: a Ruby Javascript interpreter replete with a DOM environment. Its DSL for executing javascript within Ruby makes it ideal for Javascript unit testing.
  • Jasmine: a BDD framework for Javascript not tied to any browser, framework, platform, or host language.

We will have three presenters, each of whom will be doing a talk and live demo testing actual code for a common shopping cart task. If there is interest, we might have more future sessions looking at other JS test frameworks.

Our presenters will be:

  • Brian Takita: Brian Takita is a programmer currently working for Honk and previously for Pivotal Labs. He likes neat programming tricks and respects anybody with the moxy to try them.
  • Kane Baccigalupi: Kane Baccigalupi is a coder at Cohuman.com. She has been working in Ruby since 2005, and in previous job incarnations, she wrestled into BDD charm and SQL beauty some truly terrible Rails applications. Kane has a few pet projects including Aqua, an object persistence library: http://github.com/bac....
  • Davis Frank: Davis has coded, managed, and wrangled at Intel, Broderbund, Handspring/Palm, and a couple of forgettable startups. He is now an Agile Engineer at Pivotal Labs in San Francisco, working on Rails & webOS projects and is a maintainer of the "Jasmine":http://github.com/piv... testing framework for JavaScript. He misses Grunge, loves great barbecue, and expects live fish to stay under water at all times.

We'll be at the Engine Yard in SOMA for this meetup -- there will be someone at the ground floor entrance to let you in and direct you upstairs.

We are still working on a food sponsor for the evening. If you know of an organization that might be interested, please contact Sarah or Peter.

Finally, we are working on expanding the available seats to allow some of the Waiting List to attend. We hope to have news in a day or two -- stay tuned!

See you on Thursday!
